Legalize
Ferrets

After all, they’re called Domestic Ferrets!

MisInformation from PetSavvy.com

Pet Savvy – How about the real reason ferrets are illegal in California –

Stop with the misinformation, dig a little deeper!

A recent webpage (not dated) on The PetSavvy.com answers the question Why are ferrets illegal in California?

And they cite the same ‘ol reason:

The concern is that owners may release ferrets into the wild or the pets may escape and then establish colonies in the wild. The sudden growth of a feral non-native colony could jeopardize crops and other animals.

While showing a picture of a black-footed ferret, the author, Eddie Shepherd wrote his article apparently by only researching the California Fish and Game Commission’s position on ferrets:

Basically, the laws protect the following:

  • Public health and safety
  • Agriculture
  • Wildlife
  • Natural resources

Well, Not Exactly!

Why ferrets are illegal in California
The main reason why ferrets are illegal in California is to Protect Agriculture and Wildlife.

Mr Shepherd is guilty of being misinformed and of being a very lazy journalist.

Dear Mr Shepherd – did you ever consider asking for examples of any damage caused by released or escaped ferrets? Do you know of any feral ferrets? No – because there aren’t any!

How about any examples of threats to public health and safety, agriculture, wildlife and/or natural resources?

No, because it has just never happened.

So, you are spreading misinformation. The real reason ferrets are illegal in California –

The war on pets. State authorities, PETA, HSUS, The Sierra Club among others do not want to deal with another pet in California. Some people consider pet ownership “animal slavery.” Others have mentioned the carbon footprint of ferrets, not in particular, but just one more pet for society to cope with.

But domestic ferrets are indeed domestic. The California constitution recognizes our right to own domestic animals.

Listing concerns about feral ferrets and damage to the eco system is a red herring. But if opponents of ferret legalization mentioned their true concerns, their arguments, ie carbon footprints and animal slavery would be rejected.

The real damage here, Mr Shepherd is you are giving an incorrect answer credibility. Pet Savvy? Nice title but it sure ain’t true. You don’t know anything about ferrets, and you have undermined the efforts of good people to own the domestic pet of their choice by blindly repeating the lines of our oppressors.

  1. Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason appeared to
be on the web the simplest thing to be aware of. I
say to you, I certainly get irked while people consider worries
that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as
well as defined out the whole thing without having side effect ,
people could take a signal. Will likely be
    back to get more. Thanks
