Legalize
Ferrets

After all, they’re called Domestic Ferrets!

A request to the Sierra Club of California. Please reconsider your position. Domestic ferrets are not wild animals.

What is it with the Sierra Club and domestic ferrets?

Housepets, not wild animals

You can sign our Change.org petition asking the Sierra Club to re-evaluate their position that domestic ferrets are wild animals here.

The Sierra Club of California is on record as opposing ferret legalization in California, stating that domestic ferrets are wild animals, and already an invasive species.

They offer no documentation, reports or studies.

Later, they said since the California Fish and Game Commission considers domestic ferrets as wild animals, they will follow that lead.

Ironic since the California Fish and Game Commission is following the Sierra Club’s lead. We were told by the California Fish and Game Commission that they wouldn’t legalize ferrets because they would be “sued by the ‘environmentalists.’”

“Get a legislator” we were told by the Commission. “Legislation isn’t subject to CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) compliance.

And we’ve tried. But legislators are reluctant to talk to us. After all, if esteemed organizations such as the Sierra Club are on record as opposing ferret legalization, there must be a reason.

The reason is an anti-pet mentality.

Unattributed quote from a Sierra Club activist:

“Every animal that’s brought into the state puts additional pressure on our native wildlife.  If we could outlaw dogs and cats we would.”

From the 1990 California Domestic Ferret Association Public Information Manual

When asked to justify the HSUS’s otherwise objectively indefensible position against companion ferrets, Paula Jewell of that organization replied, on January 9, 1990, simply that “We don’t need another pet.”

These opinions can’t match the majority of Sierra Club members and they certainly would be an anathema to any reasonable California legislator.

But that’s what’s carrying the day.

So, we ask you, Dear Sierra Club members – contact the Sierra Club and please sign our petition.

Finally, I would like to point out that we have called, emailed and written to the California Sierra Club and have never received a response. We are asking to be included on the agenda of their Conservation Committee when they meet in November in Pasadena.
